If you operate a food business in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, there are important legislative changes that are just around the corner.  From October 1st 2021, under the UK Food Information Amendment 2019 (known as Natasha’s Law), it will be necessary for you to provide a full list of ingredients, as well as allergen labelling on all Pre-packaged for Direct Sale Food (PPDS Foods) sold from your premises or elsewhere.

The law has been so-called after the unfortunate death of teenager Natasha Ednan-Laperpouse, who died from an allergic reaction after eating a baguette that didn’t have comprehensive allergen labelling.

What does Natasha’s Law require you to do?

As of 1st October 2021, all PPDS foods need to show the following information on their packaging:

  • The name/description of the food
  • A full list of ingredients, highlighting allergens
  • For ease of identification, each allergen that is present should be distinguished either in bold lettering, underlined, written in a different colour, in italic characters or capital letters

How will the new legislation affect your business?

The new law applies to every food business, where the food is packed prior to being made available for sale to the final customer or consumer.  This remit extends to every business where goods are regularly packed and sold on the premises (as is very much the case at Cheesman), as well as to those operators who are intending to sell food from a market stall or mobile unit. The new legislation equally applies to anyone displaying food at an event such as a food fayre, trade show, village fete or any external location.

Has Cheesman come up with a Solution?

Rest assured, as your wholesaler of choice, we are ahead of the game with this, as we already have all the necessary safeguards in place. All our pre-packaged food and dried goods come labelled with a full list of ingredients, with clear advisory information on allergies alongside. So, rest assured, you are fully protected under Natasha’s Law.

It’s also worth noting that stand-alone, single items of fruit and vegetables are excluded from the new legislation.

We hope this helps and provides you with all the assurances you need.
